Description
Following the earthquake on 12 January 2010, The International Rescue Committee is seeking a suitably qualified Environmental Health professional to assist with its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene promotion response. The response will be focused on working with local and international parters and on building local capacity to response effectively.
Reporting to the Emergency Environmental Health Coordinator, the Environmental Health Coordinator will focus on working with partner organizations to meet the environmental health needs of the affected population by supporting and enhancing local capacity.
Responsibilities
• Assist Emergency Environmental Health Coordinator with development of strategy, by facilitating participation of local partners and, though them, the affected population.
• Train and support local partners to perform emergency response actions including:
• Conducting rapid and ongoing assessments of needs and produce appropriate response plans.
• Distribution of hygiene, water storage and water treatment materials
• Training of users on the above
• Water quality testing & treatment at household or source level as appropriate
• Setting up of small scale water supply facilities (bladders, tapstands etc)
• Rehabilitation of existing networks if and where feasible and relevant
• Construction/installation of latrines as appropriate
• Sanitary monitoring of water and sanitation facilities
• Hygiene promotion activities
• Monitoring of water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, and identifying necessary course corrections.
• Design and construction of permanent water and sanitation infrastructure, or repair and extension of existing infrastructure, as required.
• Ensure that IRC partners are effectively engaged in coordination mechanisms.
• Engage local partners is planning for the recovery phase.
Qualifications
• BSc. Degree in Civil Engineering or similar, preferably with water specialization; Relevant MSc/MPH desireable;
• Minimum 3 years experience in Environmental Heatlh / WASH projects overseas, preferably in an NGO environment;
• Strong technical design skills;
• Strong English and French;
• Strong interpersonal & diplomacy skills;
• Experiencing of working with local partners and capacity building;
